Community Service Order
Community Service is unpaid work for the benefit of the community under Corrective Services supervision. It is a reparative/punitive order. Because these orders often involve contact with the community they have been considered as unsuitable for those who may pose a threat to the community. Convictions are discretionary (s100 Penalties and Sentences Act (Qld) 1992). To be eligible for a community service order the offence must be punishable by imprisonment/be a regulatory offence (s101). The duration of community service that can be awarded is between the range of a minimum of 40 hours to a maximum of 240 hours (to be performed in one year) (s103(2)). More than one community service order is allowed but the total hours must never exceed 240 (s107). The offender must consent to being subject to community service (s106). Community Service Order conditions are outlined in s103.
